  • The floating hotel that could be the future of cruising

The floating hotel that could be the future of cruising

London architect Gianluca Santosuosso’s floating hotel concept, MORPHotel, could easily be mistaken as something from J.J. Abrams’ new “Star Wars”.
The vessel, which spans about a half a mile in length, features capsules housing guest accommodations and amenities like theaters, gardens, restaurants, and a swimming pool.
Additionally, a helipad and detachable boats are included to give guests the opportunity to explore the surrounding area.

Is this the future of cruising?
As far as energy is concerned, the MORPHotel integrates solar panels, floating vegetable gardens, and rainwater harvesting facilities to keep the property functioning at sea

  • Thunderbird 2

    Thunderbird 2

Brilliant Boats and BB Yacht are proud to announce the delivery of Thunderbird 2.

Fans of Gerry Anderson will understand immediately what this vessel is all about, but if not, a little explanation may be appropriate….

Designed to carry a 3 PAX, 1000m capable Triton submarine (Thunderbird 4, of course!), Thunderbird 2 features an 8.5t capacity hydraulic platform for launch and recovery of the sub and other toys, along with the array of battery chargers and oxygen storage and transfer systems required to fully support the submarine.

Overall dimensions are 22m x 10m, and being based in the Caribbean, her full load draft of less than 1.1m, allowing access to places unimaginable in a conventional yacht.

Lightweight aluminium construction to DNV HSLC, and an interior in balsa, honeycomb and Forex, means she weighs in at just over 54 tons lightship, and has a full load displacement of only 72 tons, including 7 tons of fuel and 8 tons of Triton 3300/3.

The interior, styled by Miami interior designer Karine Rousseau, offers spacious accommodation in 2 lower deck suites, one for the Owner and one for guests, and huge entertaining spaces, a day head, office and large galley on the main deck. A flexibly mounted and heavily insulated interior means that even at full speed, sound levels are a super quiet 65dB in the lower deck accommodation and 72db on the main deck.

The aft deck is the center of operations for the submarine, with a dedicated sub support locker, but also has dive bottle storage and filling, a fuel pump and davits for the tender and large swim steps with bathing ladder for easy access to the water. Forward is an al fresco dining area, a giant sun pad for relaxing, and barbeque and bar area with built in fridge and ice maker.

2 Yanmar 8SY engines (900hp ea) and Hamilton 521 waterjets provide performance of 22 knots at full speed and a transatlantic range at an economic cruise speed of 10 knots.

Although built for a private client, Thunderbird 2 complies fully with MGN 280, allowing him the opportunity commercialize this unique package.

A sistership (The White Cat) is already under construction and is available for delivery in 2015.

Azimut Yachts introduces Azimut Atlantis 43

    – World premiere at the Düsseldorf Boat Show 2015 –
You couldn’t ask for more: the new Azimut Atlantis 43 is destined to be the new standard setter for its class. Bold and sporty on the outside, cool and refined on the inside, the latest Atlantis Collection offering is unadulterated Italian design and content.

Made in Italy excellence aboard the Azimut Atlantis 43 with the freedom to select prestigious Italian designer fabrics, by Missoni, Armani, and Loro Piana Interiors.

Making its world premiere at the Düsseldorf Boatshow 17-25 January 2015, the new model exemplifies the Italian boatyard’s ability for continuous innovation while retaining their trademark style.
Azimut’s extensive experience produces a truly appealing open version, with smart and functional solutions to meet every need. The deck is this boat’s real centerpiece. Transformable and functional, it features two large three-person sun pads, one to the stern and one to the bow. The large hard top offers sun and wind protection, providing a welcoming and comfortable shelter.
With a one piece windshield and lateral picture windows, the Atlantis 43 offers its guests unprecedented amounts of natural light that can also be modulated thanks to the large, electrically operated soft top.

Yachts middle east - Azimut - Atlantis 43 - sunpad

The exterior living area is equipped with a large dining room table, C-shaped sofa, and kitchen area. The relaxation area next to the pilot station quickly transforms into forward facing seating, providing a comfortable vantage point from which to enjoy every moment of the cruise.

The stern area with 3.5 sq.m. of decking is a masterpiece of engineering. Accessible via two sets of steps on each side, this amazing terrace on the water can be used to haul in and launch the tender or other water toys perfectly housed in the garage under the stern sunpad.
The same engineering standards of above deck can also be found below deck.
To the bow, there is a full-height boatowner suite with incredible natural light thanks to the hatch and extensive picture windows along the sides.
Equipped with an exclusive bathroom complete with separate shower stall, in this cabin as in the rest of the below deck areas in the Atlantis 43, there is also plenty of stowage space for luggage and equipment.
There are two closets and two sets of wall cabinets, as well as a large compartment accessed by tilting the bed.

Located astern, the guest cabin has no shortage of light or space. However, its real secret is its transformability. The sliding beds mean you can choose between a queen and two twin beds, a feature made even more unusual by the option of adding a third bed along the left-hand wall.

Yachts middle east - Azimut - Atlantis 43 - interior

The heart of the interiors is the living area. Located amidships, it is comfortable and welcoming with a kitchen zone (sizeable and well equipped), and a dinette with a height-adjustable table that also converts into a bed. From here you can reach a second onboard bathroom which also includes a separate shower stall. This can either serve the guest cabin or function as a daytime bathroom.
The new Azimut Atlantis 43 is powered by two V400 HP Z-drive Volvo Penta D6 engines for a maximum speed of approximately 33 knots.

PERSHING 74 THE FIRST WITH A SUNDECK

In deference to the famous and legendary Pershing 72, we could say that this Pershing 74 resembles not an evolution, but rather a revolution. Many substantial restyling components and innovations have generated an extraordinary and advanced boat.
    Yachts middle east - pershing 74 - 5
In the words of the designer Fulvio De Simoni, the main objective was “more sun area without having to touch the by now established line of the yacht.” This objective was achieved by creating a sundeck easy to reach with a retractable carbon-fibre stairway, an area for sunlight and entertainment that is an addition to the aft and forward sunpads.
    Yachts middle east - pershing 74 - 6
Total comfort and maximum liveability are provided by the folding glass door that can separate or join the cockpit and lounge. The exterior of the P74 is stunning with a profile that is even more streamlined than its predecessor, due to the cut of the larger side and complete with an openable porthole. As always, Pershing stands for speed, but in utmost comfort.

  • Ehang’s autonomous helicopter promises to fly you anywhere, no pilot required

Ehang’s autonomous helicopter promises to fly you anywhere, no pilot required

CES has already given us plenty of news about drones and cars, it’s even given us drones that launch from the back of trucks! Both industries are working toward the same end goal — completely autonomous vehicles that can carry passengers or packages. And they are relying on a similar set of fundamental technologies — from computer vision and artificial intelligence to a suite of sensors for positioning and navigation. But we rarely think of them as overlapping.

That will certainly change after this morning. Ehang, a Chinese drone company, announced a new product at CES it’s calling the Ehang 184, an all electric quadcopter scaled up from a drone so that it’s large enough to carry a passenger. Ehang calls it an autonomous aerial vehicle, I prefer personal pilotless helicopter, but if you need to explain what it is to anyone, just say it’s a driverless car for the sky.

Ehang says the 184, which is all electric, can carry a single passenger up to 10 miles or roughly 23 minutes of flight. The person in the cockpit doesn’t do any piloting, they just input their destination and enjoy the ride. The aircraft claims to be able to autonomously take off, fly a route, sense obstacles, and land. And if anything goes wrong, a human pilot is supposed to step in and take over the controls from a remote command station.

“It’s been a lifetime goal of mine to make flight faster, easier, and more convenient than ever. The 184 provides a viable solution to the many challenges the transportation industry faces in a safe and energy-efficient way,” said Ehang CEO Huazhi Hu. “I truly believe that Ehang will make a global impact across dozens of industries beyond personal travel. The 184 is evocative of a future we’ve always dreamed of and is primed to alter the very fundamentals of the way we get around.”

  • WIDER 165’ – Project Cecilia

    WIDER 165’ – Project Cecilia

    Ancona, Italy – 27th October 2015 –

Hot on the heels of the news of the launch of the Wider150 last week, the largest and most spectacular of the WIDER range, the Wider165 – project Cecilia, has now moved into the WIDER Super Yacht Division’s main production facility for fitting out.
In an operation that starting at 10pm on the evening of the 26th of October, and which lasted just over 2 hours, the yacht was moved along the 900m of public highways to WIDER’s main yard.

“This is an especially exciting time for us… last week we launched our first Superyacht, this week we look to the next one… With the aluminium hull and superstructure all but complete the first job is to attach the upper deck structure to the hull. This could not be done in the other facility because of height restrictions.. Thereafter, we will be pushing ahead with all of the various trades to ensure that we are on time for delivery to the owner in 12 months’ time.” Says Tilli Antonelli, Wider founder and CEO.

Originally developed to fulfil an owner’s desire to equip his vessel with a submersible for thrilling underwater adventures, the WIDER 165 is a no-compromise vessel that features advanced multi-functional systems, user-friendly technology, a touch and go helipad, diesel-electric propulsion, and an enhanced relationship with the sea via the WIDER beach club area, side platforms, balcony, and an interior seawater swimming pool.

Juan Balaguer, Wider COO, adds: “Although we have been busy over the last few days with the 150, checking a number of systems and performing the stability tests required by class, it was a little strange to see the main yard empty. It’s very pleasing to see our next project here and the yard is buzzing again with all the people”

Yachts middle east - WIDER 165' - Project Cecilia

    About the Wider165

Constructed entirely in aluminium, the elegant profile of the WIDER 165 was created by yacht designer Fulvio De Simoni in collaboration with WIDER Founder and CEO Tilli Antonelli and the in-house WIDER design team. The WIDER 165 has been designed to enhance the owner’s contact with the sea, while significantly increasing interior volumes compared to other similar sized motor yachts.

“Our goal is to give each and every owner exactly what they desire, creating a yacht to suit their unique personality” says Wider Founder and CEO, Tilli Antonelli.
The 50-meter aluminium superyacht presents the same elegant lines as the Wider 150, while adding significant interior volume and exterior living space. The 165’ accommodates a touch-and-go helipad, a dedicated submersible bay and offers a beach club that is fast becoming the trademark of the Wider superyacht range including the covered swimming pool.
Thanks to its Floating Launching System, the stern of the WIDER 165 can be converted into a spacious garage ideal for carrying the WIDER 32 as a tender – the transom opening hatch allows the WIDER 32 to be housed in the space used as a swimming pool – in addition to a submarine, although this could be adapted for a client’s specific needs in the future.

    LOW-CONSUMPTION DIESEL ELECTRIC PROPULSION
The beating heart of the Wider 165’ project is its diesel electric propulsion system combined with a 544kWh Lithium polymer battery bank and Azimuthal pods, which guarantees hugely reduced fuel consumption.
Four inline variable speed diesel generators, controlled by the state-of-the-art WIDER power management system and the latest battery technology, serve the hotel and propulsion requirements of the vessel.

The traditional engine room has been replaced by a Power Generator Room, located in the bow. This leaves the mid ship of the vessel free for larger, more comfortable guest cabins located in the most stable part of the yacht. This arrangement is only possible because of the use of Azimuthal pods which receive power through an electric cable unlike traditional propulsion systems which have shafts.
In addition to space gains, this combination of Diesel Electric combined with Lithium polymer battery banks and Azimuthal pods affords significant advantages compared to conventional shaft-line propulsion. These include:

    • increased reliability
    • fuel efficiency
    • greater range
    • shallow draft
    • lower noise and vibration
    • reduced maintenance
    • greater flexibility

The propulsion system is also completely modular, meaning the WIDER 165 can cruise using only the battery packs, in ZEM (Zero Emission Mode), or with up to four inline diesel generators. When fully charged, the battery power is sufficient to power all of the hotel services, including air conditioning, for an overnight stay at anchor or while enjoying the beach in complete silence, with no engines running.

A range of 3,500nm is expected at a cruising speed of 13 knots, increasing to 5,000nm at the economical speed of 10 knots. The yacht has a maximum speed of 15 knots. Also available at Zero Emission Speed, the WIDER 165 can run solely on batteries for silent cruising at lower speeds (5 knots), or for short movements, avoiding the need to start generators to move anchorages or for early starts.
As with all of the Wider Superyacht range, the onboard power sources are controlled by the WIDER Power Management System, a smart and fully integrated system which controls the power supplied by the shore connection, the gen-sets and the battery packs, distributing it between the hotel requirements, the propulsion system and the recharging of batteries, as required.
Our dedicated partner in this project, and the supplier of our WIDER Power Management system, is the market-leading, global powerhouse, Emerson Industrial Automation.

Yachts middle east - WIDER 165' - bulbous bow

    All-ALUMINUM CONSTRUCTION

The yacht’s intelligent design focuses on minimising fuel consumption and emissions while maximizing onboard living space, without underestimating the importance of easy maintenance. The material chosen for the entire construction of the Wider 165’ is aluminium, a noble, durable metal that, being particularly lightweight, makes it possible to increase the performance/consumption ratio of the yacht and hence achieve a considerable reduction in emissions. Combined with the fact that aluminium is completely recyclable, this helps to reduce the vessel’s footprint on the environment. Aluminium also provides greater freedom during construction as it increases the opportunity for customisation, yet considerably shortens production times.

The yacht’s interior design and general arrangement correspond to Wider’s mission of enhancing the connection of the owner and guests to the water at all times through the use of large windows, side-opening balconies and spacious exterior dining and entertaining areas. Among the many unique features on board the WIDER 165 are the owner’s private terrace overlooking the sea, which opens off the full-beam master cabin. The sizeable guest quarters comprise four en-suite cabins on the lower deck.

The crew of 11, are divided among five cabins on the lower deck and a sizeable cabin for the captain next to the wheelhouse. An ample crew mess complies with the latest standards (LY3) for crew. A central corridor gives direct access to the engine room, located at the furthest point from the guest accommodation.
“Our new flagship will represent the finest marriage of aesthetics, innovation and cutting-edge technology that the yachting world has seen so far,” Tilli Antonelli said.

This yacht is on track to be delivered to her owner in late 2016.

  • Nina

    Nina

Nina is a new and exciting 38-metre design from Heesen Yachts, build on the proven semi-displacement hull form. Both the exterior and interior are designed by Hot Lab, a young team of Milan-based designers.

yachts middle east - Heesen Yachts - Nina

Sporty and dynamic, the aluminium hull can reach a top speed of 23 knots powered by twin MTU engines. For optimal trim and stabilisation, Humphree Active Interceptors are fitted as standard, but at-anchor stabilisation is also an option.

Hot Lab has taken the classic Heesen look and refreshed it by maximising window space and open-air deck areas for owners to enjoy stunning sea views. The upper deck aft has been extended to create room for a 6 metre jet tender and water toys.
The sun deck is shaded by the Bimini hard top for casual, open-air dining with grill and bar area. The area can be accessed both internally from the bridge deck and via a special collapsible stairs from the upper aft deck.

The exterior styling is dominated by the single horizontal line of the upper deck to create a profile that is at once classic and contemporary. Travelling at an impressive top speed of 23 knots, our 38-metre Nina provides the rare combination of style and performance. A yacht built to exceed expectations on every level.

The idea behind Nina is as simple as it is elegant: combining the best of the semi-displacement hull form of her predecessors with a unique, luxurious new identity. At every level, inside and outside, our master craftsmen and designers went above and beyond to make this yacht as exciting as the destinations she takes her owners.

On the lower deck there is a lazarette with day head and shower that can be turned into a cosy beach club. Creating the perfect waterside oasis for owners and guests to relax and enjoy the beautiful surroundings. Water sports enthusiasts can also use this area of the yacht for storing yet more water toys. With plenty of possibilities, Nina’s outdoor features make her a highly versatile yacht.

MAIN SALOON I The generous main saloon overlooks the aft deck through sliding glass doors. Both the salon and adjacent dining room feature full-height windows for uninterrupted views. Minimalistic yet inviting, the main saloon features all facilities needed to relax at the end of a day’s cruising.

OWNER’S STATEROOM I The Owner’s stateroom offers the same beautifully crafted interior design as Nina’s main saloon, using the very best materials and fabrics. The windows allow an abundance of natural light inside for a distinguished and modern atmosphere with an airy, relaxing vibe. The stateroom is a complete mini apartment with study, full-beam suite, large walk-in wardrobe and a generous bathroom with shower and bathtub.

GUEST SUITE I The lower deck layout is designed to be as comfortable and functional as possible. The guest accommodation consists of four generous cabins, all with en-suite facilities. Despite being just 38 metres in length overall, the beam is almost 8 metres. This provides the interior with the necessary volume to keep the crew areas separate from the guest areas to ensure a smooth crew circulation and plenty of privacy.
