NAUTICA ITALIANA’S MEMBERS bring on stage a strong representation of Italian brands at the 75th Yachts Miami Beach

The positive sentiment for the year that has just begun confirms the ability of
Italian brands to seize the opportunities offered by growth in the Americas.
Focus on the customers of the future: Millennials

18 February 2016. NAUTICA ITALIANA, the association affiliated with Fondazione Altagamma and grouping together the high-end Italian companies from the entire sector — Industry, Services and Territories – gathered a very positive sentiment from its members at the prestigious US boat show, Yachts Miami Beach, which naturally also includes the South American market.

Several brands in the NAUTICA ITALIANA association that are among the top players in Italian shipbuilding — whether large yachts, inflatable boats or accessories — chose the Miami International Boat Show to showcase their latest models and new projects, developed based on cutting-edge technology, materials and styling approaches on which the Italian industry has been constantly working.

The prestigious Miami International Boat Show was strategically chosen for the increasing opportunities offered by North and South American markets. According to data released on opening days by the NMMA (National Marine Manufacturers Association), the American boating industry has continued to grow with a strong 6% increase YoY over the past five years, and is expected to maintain this trend in the upcoming years. This growth that saw as many as 88 million people sail for an overall spending in pleasure boating that in 2015 exceeded $37 billion. The NMMA data also showed that 95% of the boats used in the USA are manufactured locally.

Lamberto Tacoli, Chairman of NAUTICA ITALIANA, stated: “Based on the sentiment of NAUTICA ITALIANA’s members, it is this last figure that shows the greatest opportunities for our industry. Indeed, according to 2015 trends and 2016 forecasts gathered by our members, the USA is a market with a strong growth potential, where a high appreciation and deep-rooted passion for boating offer great opportunities for the high-end Italian companies.”

In fact, the remaining 5% of boats not produced in the USA chiefly includes large yachts that are manufactured by the largest Italian companies, who are ready to increase their presence locally. Italian companies are thus targeting the highest-end market that seeks quality, design and the excellence typical of Italian products. Likewise, top manufacturers of inflatable boats and accessories can seize the multiple opportunities offered by the remaining 95% of the market (largely filled by smaller boats, under 30ft) to expand their business. According to NMMA, the typical buyer for this range of models is the middle class: a segment with an income below $100,000 per year that increasingly seeks quality and design – a need that Italian brands can meet.

Giovanna Vitelli, Vice-President of NAUTICA ITALIANA, added: “Both in terms of visitors and the growing number of exhibitors, the Miami International Boat Show was the litmus of a market that can grow in very interesting ways worldwide.
The interest for all-Italian products by the North-American public, as well as Latin-American visitors, was clear and, fortunately, we have seen it turn into sale and purchase agreements of all sizes. In addition, since the purchase process is less impulsive in this part of the world as well, many of our members are going back home with open negotiations that will be finalised in the following weeks.”

Director Corrado Salvemini, representing the accessories sector, stated: “There has been an excellent flow of visitors in the accessories section of the Show and in the section of small- and medium-sized boats. In demand for accessories, where all-Italian products can play a major role, we saw a confirmation of the recovery trend of the market for this type of boats. Which is also why we can say that the Show opened up excellent opportunities for our industry over the coming years.”

Therefore, after some difficult years, the market has shown the first signs of a recovery, as confirmed by an increase in orders for 2015, driven by growth in the USA and Europe.
The presence of NAUTICA ITALIANA’s members at the MIAMI event is also important to gather new elements to support the strategy developed for the industry. In detail, the needs of a younger target group are being explored.

As shown by NMMA that traced the 2014-2015 trend of North American markets and 2016 trends during Boot Düsseldorf, the average age of boat owners is approximately 6 months older each year. Attracting new generations to the boating world is therefore essential for the industry’s future.
In this sense, NAUTICA ITALIANA, working together with Fondazione Altagamma — with which it is implementing the Nautica 365 project to promote and expand the industry — is ready to seize and develop the important guidelines that emerged in the Foundation’s recent study, True Luxury Global Consumer Insight. Carried out with the Boston Consulting Group, the study clearly shows that the luxury market over the next few years will continue to grow, but consumers will be more discerning and the new big spenders will be Millennials.
The survey highlights that overall there were 400 million high-end consumers worldwide in 2015, who spent a total of €845 billion, including unbranded products but excluding cars and yachts. This is a significant and strategic challenge for the nautical industry.

    Further information on NAUTICA ITALIANA
NAUTICA ITALIANA, the association affiliated with Fondazione Altagamma, was founded in September 2015 by 25 leading Italian nautical manufacturers with the aim to bring together top firms from the entire sector — Industry, Services and Territories —, draw up a strategy for the development and growth of the nautical industry, both in Italy and internationally, and restore the international stature that it deserves.
Open to cooperation with other important industry players, such as Territories and regional Districts, it is selective in its efforts, with a focus on its Charter of Values and shared strategic project.
Nautica Italiana’s positioning and particular focus on international markets are traits it shares with Fondazione Altagamma, which since 1992 has been a common forum for top Italian cultural and creative firms recognised as true ambassadors of Italian style to the world. In fact, the affiliation with Fondazione Altagamma stems from the awareness of the possibility of creating strong synergies with other sectors of excellence and further enhancing the role of the entire nautical industry.
In order to achieve these goals, the association drew up “NAUTICA 365” — a 360° strategic project for 365 days of the year based on three main pillars: the Nautica Italiana Manifesto, with nine concrete legislative proposals to support industry growth; the “Ethical Contract” to ensure professionalism and transparency, and a national and international promotional plan with a new nautical events strategy.
The Board consists of seven members: Lamberto Tacoli (Chairman); Luigi Alberto Amico, Cataldo Aprea, Fabio Boschi, and Giovanna Vitelli (Vice Chairpersons); Corrado Salvemini (Director); and Lorenzo Pollicardo (General Secretary).

Continental Four trawler range premiers new antiroll system

Van der Valk Shipyard in the Netherlands has launched the 36.80-metre Santa Maria T, part of its Continental Four range. The largest trawler yacht built by Van der Valk to date, she represents the first of a new generation of designs created in partnership with Guido de Groot. Santa Maria T also showcases a brand-new two-axis fin antiroll damping system that provides stabilization underway and at zero speed.

The Continental Four series embodies a style that is classic, timeless yet clearly distinctive. Van der Valk took great care to ensure the best possible sailing and seakeeping qualities for this design, including an original round-bilged steel hull. Built to endure the toughest weather conditions, Santa Maria T has a large fuel capacity that ensures a transatlantic range. She is a full displacement motoryacht with a steel hull and aluminium superstructure; an all-aluminium fast-displacement version of the Continental Four is also available.

yachts middle east - Santa Maria T - Continental Trawler

    Customised superyacht
Both the exterior and interior of Santa Maria T were fully customised to her owner’s wishes. Entering the aft deck from the winding staircase it is clear that this is a proper superyacht. The aft deck itself is spacious and contains an eight-person seating area with table as well as a small pantry with sink and refrigerator. A four-way foldable stainless steel door links the aft deck with the main saloon.

Exemplifying a striking art-nouveau interior style, this area is characterised by some fine detailing. The mahogany woodwork is enhanced with Pacific madrona burl inlays, solid herringbone floorings, embossed alcantara panelling on walls and ceilings, indirect lighting, and perfectly matching artwork.

The professionally equipped galley includes all the items a chef could need. The corridor on the starboard side offers access to the day head, the captain’s office and the forward helm station. The three-metre dashboard is beautifully upholstered with green top grain leather and equipped with the latest SIMRAD navigation equipment. A two-person settee on each side of the dashboard allows guests to enjoy the same forward views as the captain. The wheelhouse is fitted with a side door on each side.

yachts middle east - Santa Maria T - master bedroom lounge

    Impressive owners’ area
An upholstered spiral staircase provides access to the lower deck area. This section was designed exclusively for the owner and his guests. Fifty per cent of the total accommodation space is taken up by the owner’s quarters. The main stateroom is located amidships and features a bed upholstered entirely in leather, as well as a huge walk-in wardrobe, office, lounge and ensuite bathroom. The latter is finished entirely in two marble tones – green and off-white – and features a cast iron bathtub.

The remainder of the accommodation deck is taken up by three guest cabins – a double VIP suite in the bow, a twin guest cabin to port, and a twin queen-sized bunk bed cabin to starboard. All of the guest cabins have their own private bathroom, also finished in two different tones of marble. The crew premises aft comprise three cabins with direct access to the engine room and lazarette, a spacious galley, a crew mess and two bathrooms.

    Powerful performance
Santa Maria T boasts a considerable engine room. The two Volvo Penta D16 MH 651 hp engines can be walked around. The D16 engines come with a rating 1 continuous duty certificate, meaning they can perform 24/7 without a single stop. Santa Maria T is the first yacht in the world delivered with an all-new two-axis fin antiroll damping system that provides stabilization both underway and at zero speed without compromising performance in either circumstance.

Other equipment of note aboard Santa Maria T includes the side boarding ladder (with side dock for mooring a tender), hydraulic lazarette hatch, hydraulic swim ladder and customised and widened hydraulic passerelle. Her flybridge can be accessed from both inside and outside (via stairs on the aft deck).

At almost 20 metres in length, the flybridge itself is huge. Everything needed for warm days in the sun can be found upstairs: a full aluminium hardtop, two spacious dining/lounge areas, a kitchen/wet bar with refrigerators, ice maker and a barbeque, an area dedicated to sun beds, and a crane with a capacity of 1200 kg for launching the custom 6.40-metre carbon fibre Beachlander tender.

    Global reputation
In summary, the 36.80-metre Santa Maria T has set the standard for the new Continental Four range and is sure to impress as she traverses the world. Van der Valk has proven that this exciting new series of trawler yachts has everything it takes to enhance the global reputation of this Dutch yard as it approaches its silver jubilee.

Heesen Yachts delivers 45m semi-displacement sports yacht YN 17145 Amore Mio

Heesen Yachts is proud to announce that after intensive sea trials in the North Sea, YN 17145 Amore Mio – the largest and most powerful sports yacht ever built in the Netherlands – has been delivered to her owners in international waters as scheduled.

The sea trials took place on January 18, 19 and 21 in southeasterly prevailing winds and waves of 0.5 to 1 metres. Powered by twin MTU 16V diesel engines, Amore Mio’s sleek 45-metre aluminium hull sliced through the seas at a thundering top speed of 30 knots. Not only did she meet all the contractual speed requirements, but the sea trials also proved the all-aluminium superyacht to be very quiet and highly maneuverable.

Amore Mio’s Captain, Tripp Hock, comments: “Heesen added a third day to their standard sea trial program, which they are calling the Captain’s Day. This was a welcome addition and allowed me free scope for requesting all kinds of further testing like crash stops, dead ship operations and single engine maneuvering. As the first Heesen sea trialed at ‘light load’, I was eager to see in particular how the gyro stabilisers would function on such a buoyant ship in the North Sea. To my relief, all the coffee cups stayed on the tables.”

The solidity and integrity of the semi-displacement, aluminium hull design means this yacht is capable of both rapid acceleration and a very smooth ride – so guests arrive stirred, but never shaken. Naval architecture comes in-house from Heesen Yachts. With a range of 2,750 nautical miles at 12 knots, Amore Mio can cross the Mediterranean with ease or cruise the entire length of the Caribbean from St. Barths to Grenada, stopping off at as many islands as one chooses on just one tank of fuel.

Her long, angular exterior lines soar like a javelin from the knuckle bow through to the transom. This head-turning superyacht is yet another high calibre, successful design by Omega Architects. Amore Mio is performance yacht that delivers equal parts power and sophistication, setting her apart from every other sportster on the market.

Amore Mio is the first yacht to be delivered by Heesen in 2016. Later in the year two more will follow: the 70m flagship Project Kometa, and the 50m semi-displacement Project Akoya. Heesen currently has ten yachts under construction.

  • First order in for Breedendam MTB fourzero Wheelhouse

First order in for Breedendam MTB fourzero Wheelhouse

Construction of retro classic hull underway

Breedendam Yachts in the Netherlands has sold the first boat in the wheelhouse version of its MTB fourzero design. The new order follows the critical praise received for this recently introduced 13.37-metre retro classic yacht, which comes complete with the very latest technologies and is designed by Guido de Groot.

Construction is now underway of this new addition to the Breedendam Yachts portfolio in the yard’s facilities in Leeuwarden (NL). Her aluminium hull has a blue colour scheme and the owner has requested various special features on board, including a wide array of diving equipment and a hydraulic bathing ladder and gangway.

The first MTB fourzero Wheelhouse will also be equipped for both warm and cold climates so that it can be used in areas ranging from the Netherlands to the Caribbean. Another special feature of the boat is that it will be possible to allow the yacht to run dry so that the owner can explore the Dutch Wadden Islands and other shallow regions.

yachts middle east - Guido de Groot - MTB interior design

Her layout is highly practical with accommodation for four people. She has a fully equipped galley, a dinette that can be converted into a double bed, a large salon area in the wheelhouse, a master cabin, and a large bathroom and shower room. Her interior design will provide a relaxed atmosphere in a contemporary style that matches the timeless lines of the exterior. The choice of materials follows the high quality for which Breedendam Yachts is renowned.

The main wood on board is teak, which is nicely combined with white surfaces to reflect the personal taste of the owner. The teak is lacquered in a way that retains its natural look, with stainless steel details bringing in the accents. The curved windows in the wheelhouse are double glassed and made of real glass. Synthetic leathers and outdoor fabrics are used for the sofa upholstery and Alcantara on the walls of the owner’s cabin.

In addition to being soft and comfortable to the touch, the fabrics are extremely strong, durable and stain-resistant. They offer clear added value to the contemporary interior style with a perfect balance of beauty, tradition and technology.

All technical systems feature the latest technologies. The electrical CAN Bus system makes operating equipment and appliances simple, including on remote with an iPad. The sunroof and the sliding window between the saloon and cockpit are also electrically operated. LED lighting is used throughout, the three televisions are 4k (Ultra HD). The MTB fourzero Wheelhouse is powered by two Volvo IPS600 engines which give her a maximum speed of 35 knots but also allow the helmsman to hold position with a single push on the button.

The new MTB fourzero Wheelhouse is due to be delivered during the 2016 summer sailing season in Europe.

  • Project Nova: Hull and superstructure joined together

Project Nova: Hull and superstructure joined together

Heesen Yachts is proud to announce that on Saturday January 16, 2016 at the facility in Oss, the hull and superstructure of YN 17850 Project Nova were joined together.

Project Nova is the world’s first Fast Displacement Hull Form (FDHF) equipped with hybrid propulsion.

Heesen has been the first shipyard to apply the FDHF to superyachts, starting with the revolutionary 65m Galactica Star, and continued with 42m Alive, 55m Azamanta, and 50m Sibelle.

Project Nova, unlike Galactica Star, is not designed for exceptionally high speeds. Instead, the ultra-efficient hull form provides the lower speeds typically associated with traditional displacement hulls, but with vastly lower fuel consumption.

The result is unique: a high-performance, supremely comfortable displacement yacht with reduced environmental impact.

At 12 knots Project Nova will have a fuel consumption of 98 litres per hour (excluding generators) and at 10 knots this will be reduced to a 57.5 litres per hour – a staggering figure for a 50m yacht displacing 315 tons and with a gross tonnage of 499. Her cruising range of 3,750nm at 12 knots will be achieved with a fuel capacity of just 45,000 litres.

Project Nova’s top speed of 16.3 knots will be achieved thanks to two MTU 12V 2000 M61 diesel engines of 600 kW each, which are smaller than those typically installed on a yacht of this size. This proves the outstanding efficiency of the Fast Displacement Hull Form devised by Van Oossanen Naval Architects and achieved thanks to Heesen’s minute attention to weight control.

Project Nova is not just an ultra-efficient, low fuel-burning yacht. She also adds a new dimension to luxury: silence. Project Nova perfectly combines fuel efficiency with quiet cruising thanks to her hybrid propulsion system.
With her two water cooled DC electric shaft motors of 127 kW each, Project Nova can cruise at speeds up to 9 knots using the generators alone. At this speed the consumption is predicted to be a remarkable 45 litres per hour. Moreover, the hybrid set-up provides significant noise reduction, as one can appreciate from the comparison table below.

yachts middle east - Heesen yachts - Project Nova 's hull

Area w/ main engines w/ hybrid propulsion at 9 knots
    Owner’s stateroom 50 dB (A) 46 dB (A)

    Dining area 60 dB (A) 48 dB (A)
    Upper saloon 58 dB (A) 46 dB (A)
    Guest cabins 58 dB (A) 46 dB (A)

yachts middle east - Heesen yachts - Project Nova - joining hull and superstructure

The hybrid propulsion system offers some additional advantages:
on longer passages and across a wide range of speeds up to 15.7 knots, the shaft motors can be used as generators to provide the hotel loads, meaning the generators can be switched off with a consequent saving in fuel.

In boost mode (main engines plus the shaft motors), Project Nova will gain an additional 0.6 knots, bringing the maximum speed to 16.3 knots

This stunning piece of technology is wrapped in an elegant design package with exterior lines by Omega Architects and interior styling by Sinot Yacht Design. Project Nova’s exterior lines break with Heesen yachts of the past, but still retain the sense of seaworthiness and performance that has become our trademark. Her vertical bow, for example, is not just a styling exercise: it also serves to reduce the vertical acceleration that causes discomfort for guests on board.

Twelve guests will be accommodated in six staterooms and will have plenty of outdoor space for enjoying life at sea.

Project Nova is available for purchase and is scheduled to be delivered in Spring 2017 after intensive sea trials in the North Sea.

The first month of the new year will see plenty of new developments for Azimut Yachts. At the upcoming Düsseldorf Boat Show, scheduled for January 23 through 31 2016, the Italian yacht-manufacturing company will present the world premiere of the Azimut 66 Flybridge, a new example of the ability to innovate that has made the company a world leader.

The Azimut 66 is part of the Flybridge Collection, the most classic of Azimut’s collections, and the one which has seen the most important renewal of its stylistic and technical content. The process of renewal of the range began with the Azimut 80 in 2013, to continue with the Azimut 50 in 2014 and the recent Azimut 72, unveiled in September. And so the team of Azimut technicians has been faced with the difficult task of producing a new 20 metre vessel combining all the innovations appearing in the most recent models in the new collection, a process that has transformed the Azimut 66 Fly into a true icon representing the entire range.

Visitors to the Düsseldorf Boat Show will be the first to admire the harmonious lines of the Azimut 66, designed by Stefano Righini, with the hallmark shark’s fin shaped side window, the particularly spacious elongated flybridge and the prow area transformed into an exclusive lounge. The carbon fibre superstructure makes the vessel considerably lighter and increases its interior volume. Designer Carlo Galeazzi, who worked on the interiors of the Azimut 66 with the shipyard’s styling office, not only came up with the usual refined decor but focused his attention on the need to optimise use of space, obtaining extra storage space in the already ample interior volumes to make the Azimut 66 an even more convenient vessel.

As part of the renewal of Azimut’s brand identity focusing on the true value of Italian craftsmanship, in Dusseldorf, as in Cannes, Genoa, Fort Lauderdale and Hainan, Azimut will appear with a new image designed by architect Michele De Lucchi. De Lucchi, one of Italy’s best-known architects (who designed the Triennale in Milan, the Palazzo delle Esposizioni in Rome, and the Neues Museum in Berlin), was appointed to redesign the Italian yacht-manufacturing company’s stands to represent the company’s particularly Italian identity before the whole world.

Meanwhile, Azimut Yachts continues to reinforce its distribution network in Europe, with the signature of new Official Dealership Agreements in 2015. After launching Azimut Yachts London with offices in Mayfair, Azimut Yachts Finland and Azimut Yachts Austria & Germany are also now fully operative.

Van der Valk unveils new Continental Five range

Van der Valk Shipyard in the Netherlands has revealed an impressive concept for a new 38-metre explorer yacht. The Continental Five range has been developed in partnership with Guido de Groot in a variety of exterior designs, ranging from futuristic to classic.

Despite the wide range of choices available in terms of her exterior profile lines, the overall design of the Continental Five has a distinctly masculine character. Sporting a round-bilge hull, owners can opt for a full displacement version with a steel hull and aluminium superstructure or an all-aluminium fast-displacement vessel.

    Rich experience

Leveraging on Van der Valk Shipyards’ rich experience in explorer-type vessels, the Continental Five will offer a premium performance in even the toughest weather conditions. It is specifically designed with a significant fuel capacity, and will be easily capable of transatlantic passages. A powerful propulsion package includes twin CAT C18 ACERT diesel engines.

The triple-deck configuration offers serious interior and exterior space, and provides many different layout possibilities. The interior will be characterised by an extraordinary level of comfort and finishing.

    Design by Guido de Groot

The Continental Five is a fine example of the excellent partnership between Van der Valk Continental Yachts and yacht designer Guido de Groot. “We work both directly for shipyards and private clients,” explains De Groot. “Van der Valk has been around for more than half a century and it has been a pleasure to work with them over the past three years as they have increased their presence in the superyacht sector.

“The yard is easy to communicate with and highly professional. We have designed a number of completely new models and three yachts have already been successfully delivered. The Continental Five is the largest design to be unveiled to date and we are especially proud of the flexible layout possibilities of this 38-metre yacht.”

    Deck by deck

Moving thought the decks of the Continental Five it is clear that everything has been carefully thought through based on the yard’s rich experience and the design skills of Guido de Groot. The standard arrangement sun deck includes a good-sized wet bar, large L-shaped settee and a spacious sunbed. The bridge deck houses a large outside lounge deck, a pilothouse, the captain’s office, a sky lounge with pantry and kitchenette, and a social area on the aft deck which is ideal as an alfresco lounge or dining space.

The main deck aft accommodates the toys and tender or a helipad or swimming pool. The spacious main saloon has floor-to-ceiling doors to starboard and port that allow broad views all around. The forward location of the master suite also affords some stunning vistas.

Finally, the lower deck aft houses a beach club with sauna, a hydraulically operated swimming platform, a day head and a shower. The lower deck accommodations include one VIP suite, three guest cabins, and a crew area with a spacious crew mess and laundry, two crew cabins with twin berths and a double captain’s cabin.

  • Van der Valk Continental Yachts announces new order 27-metre yacht “Continental Two” for experienced owner

Van der Valk Continental Yachts announces new order 27-metre yacht “Continental Two” for experienced owner

Van der Valk Continental Yachts in the Netherlands has received an order for a new 27-metre Continental Two motoryacht. The naval architecture brief will be met by Jaron Ginton, while Guido de Groot is responsible for both the exterior and interior design. Construction of the hull will start in January and the yacht is slated for delivery in the spring of 2017.

The owner of the new vessel is a very experienced yachtsman with some very clear requirements. Van der Valk was the natural choice to take on the project as a yard with a proven track record in accommodating such wide-ranging wishes.

The all-aluminium, round-bilged fast displacement hull will feature a bulb on the submerged section, extending the waterline. This will set the yacht apart from vessels with a traditional hull and improve performance. The 6.72-metre beam will be exceptionally wide and the yacht will have Lloyd’s approval for the construction and welding plan, as well as full MCA-MGN-280 Vessel operating Category 2 certification.

    Fun and games
In a significant departure from previous Continental Two builds, the flybridge will not be home to the tender but instead be entirely devoted to fun and leisure. It will feature a U-shaped dining area and a wet bar as well as a grill and sunbathing area with plenty of sunbeds. The foredeck will comprise a huge U-shaped settee and sunbed integrated in the superstructure fender storage.

The pleasures to be found in the water will be the focus of the large lazarette which will house diving equipment and toys, including Seabobs, as well as a wet space and technical area. An exceptionally large bathing platform was specifically requested by the owner based on his previous experiences, and will also be the resting place for the tender when not in use. The yacht will also feature an Opacmare transformer platform, a multifunctional gangway, a tender lift, and a fold-down platform reaching down to the water.

The spacious interior layout will comprise a U-shaped settee on the aft deck, an owners’ stateroom, a VIP suite and two guest cabins, as well as a V-shaped cabin for two crew members in the forepeak. The finish of the new yacht’s interior is still under discussion, with the owner leaning towards a minimalist style.

yachts middle east - Van der Valk - Continental two - Guido de Groot design

    A propulsion first
This Continental Two will be the first aluminium yacht in the entire world to be fitted with MAN 1900 V12 engines, which have an impressive maximum capacity of 1900 hp at 2300 rpm. “These are the heaviest, most powerful engines ever supplied by MAN Rollo for a yacht, and have only been available on the market since September 2015,” explains Karel Schuurman, sales manager for marine and industrial application at MAN Rollo. “This is the first time we are selling engines of this calibre.” The MAN range of light duty engines have a favourable power to weight ratio and compact dimensions, making them extraordinarily well suited for Van der Valk’s fast aluminium motoryachts.

The new Continental Two will also feature a VG120 gyro stabilizer by VEEM, which represents the state of the art in roll stabilization and ensures optimal comfort. It deploys multiple smart control algorithms to ensure optimal stabilization in a wide range of conditions, as well as safe operation in choppy seas and at high speeds. An innovative economical mode of operation automatically reduces flywheel rpm when less stabilization is required, saving on power and decreasing noise.

    The Continental Two
Introduced in 2007, the Continental Two is a series of two-level yachts available in a flybridge and wheelhouse version. It was the first model made suitable for the revolutionary Volvo Penta IPS, a joystick-operated drive system with counter-rotating forward-facing propellers. It is mainly built in semi-displacement, full aluminium (hard chine, moderate V hull) designs, but is also available in full aluminium fast-displacement (round bilged), aluminium planing (hard-chine, moderate V hull) or steel full displacement (hard-chine or round bilged) versions.

    Other yard news
Van der Valk Continental Yachts currently has several other projects under construction. They include two 23-metre Continental Two vessels, a 26-metre Continental Three and a 23.95-metre Continental Four, all due for delivery in 2016. There are also ongoing refit projects on three Continental One yachts in the sizes 15, 17 and 19 metres. The latter is a major refit involving a new interior, comprehensive exterior including paintjob, and updates to technical equipment.

  • Atalante sets new standards

    Atalante sets new standards

The first Truly Classic 127 Atalante has been delivered by Claasen Shipyards in the Netherlands to a delighted repeat client. Designer and naval architect André Hoek is equally impressed by this exceptional super yacht: “Atalante’s build quality and design place her among the finest boats in this category and confirms Claasen Shipyards’ position among the yacht building elite.”

Built for an experienced client, Atalante is a successor to a TC90 of the same name. The owner’s brief called for a larger, faster yacht with more comfortable accommodation for both guests and crew, without being so large as to lose intimate contact with the water, and the ability to ‘spin the boat on a sixpence’ when racing.

In addition to the exterior profile and naval architecture, Hoek Design has also been responsible for the interior design. Claasen Shipyards, Hoek Design, Nigel Ingram from MCM and Atalante’s experienced captain/crew James and Kate Prince have incorporated a great deal of know-how into Atalante. “She represents unrivalled value for money, and the craftsmen at Claasen have excelled in terms of the execution of materials, joinery and finishing,” says Andre Hoek. “The same goes for the technical aspects – the systems, the layout of the engine room, the hydraulics, the cabling. Atalante has been built to a truly impressive level of quality.” The classic, but relaxed, soft furnishings were designed and supplied by London-based Hamilton Weston.

yachts middle east - Claasen Shipyard - Atalante

    Built to win

With continuous longitudinal framing of high tensile aluminium, Atalante is also very performance-oriented. Particular focus was given to this aspect, as she will compete in the bucket regattas and super yacht cups. Atalante has a deep-draught keel, a thin foil section, carbon rudder and cable-based direct steering, all of which gives great feel and feedback at the wheel. The underwater configuration in conjunction with the carbon mast and rigging, and sporting North 3DI sails should make her a fast boat on the regatta circuit.

“Atalante is a step above anything we’ve produced so far at Claasen,” adds project manager Victor Weerens. “This was achieved by a great team of people, attention to detail, materials selection and top-class production and construction techniques. For example, after an extensive search in the Netherlands and abroad we found the perfect mahogany veneers for the interior. These are the details that make or break a project.”

    Ingenious layout

While Atalante was created specifically for her owner, she is also the first in a series. Claasen Shipyards and Hoek Design cooperated closely to ensure that the design is sufficiently flexible for use as a customisable foundation upon which other owners can now build. This is reflected in both the construction and the layout.

On Atalante the main salon is aft of the main deckhouse and the owner’s cabin is aft of the saloon. As the owner enjoys being highly involved in sailing and helming the yacht, he wanted the wheel in the aft cockpit and the aft deckhouse to be dedicated to navigation. This means that when the yacht is at anchor, the whole aft area is reserved for the owners.

Atalante is equally suited as a cruising boat for a family and a charter yacht. Her interior is executed in raised and fielded panelling of carefully selected West Indies mahogany. The ceilings and walls above the wainscot level are painted white. While the yacht could easily have contained more cabins, the owner specified fewer, roomier interior spaces.

yachts middle east - Claasen Shipyard - Atalante exterior dining table

    Owner’s area

The aft deckhouse comprises a large navigation station with two screens, a pilot berth, a fridge for cold drinks and a useful boiling water tap for coffee or tea. Access forward to the master suite is via an electric sliding door, conveniently connecting the two spaces. First-class sound insulation provides a peaceful environment in the master cabin, even when sailing. The aft deckhouse serves as the owner’s office when Atalante is at anchor.

The full-beam master has been made as symmetrical as possible. To starboard, a lovely vanity table opens up to display a back-lit mirror. To port is a comfortable sofa providing a quiet place to read or relax. There are plenty of easily accessible lockers, including some full-length lockers for the owner’s wife’s dresses, and the toilet and bidet are separate from the bathroom with shower.

    Superlative finishing

Atalante’s full-beam salon, which seats at least ten people, is flooded with natural light. There is a pleasant bar area, bookcases, a TV and plenty of comfortable seating, ideal for all kinds of entertainment.

The day head in the salon is linked via a watertight door to the air-conditioned control room, which in turn opens onto the engine room. This ingenious layout creates a buffer between the noise of the engine room and the main salon and keeps the control systems in a cool environment.

The stunning interior furnishings, designed by Hamilton Weston (the fourth such project for the owner) are well thought-through and provide a sense of continuity throughout the boat. The custom leather coffee table in the saloon features integrated trays that can be flipped to make a horizontal surface, and conceal storage beneath. All free spaces are optimised to maximise storage, and all floors and ceilings are removable to provide access to systems and tanks.

yachts middle east - Claasen Shipyard - Atalante master bedroom

    Main deckhouse and guest cabins

The dining area is located in the main deckhouse forward, which is half a level up from the saloon via a curved staircase. This bright space comprises a large dining table to port and comfortable seating with a sliding card table and flag locker storage to starboard. The cabinet housing the card table also is home to two cutlery drawers with custom-made inserts in dark blue velvet by Carrs of Sheffield (UK), who also supplied the cutlery.

Going forward, two beautiful guest cabins are sited to port and starboard. On the port side is a large double berth with en-suite bathroom, a sofa and plentiful storage. To starboard is an equivalent twin berth cabin with en-suite facilities. Interior furnishings and artwork complete an extremely comfortable picture.

    Galley and crew area

Just forward of the mast, an automatic door provides entry to the crew area. The galley is characterised by many clever details and has everything needed for the chef to produce top-quality cuisine. The induction hob and oven gimbal through 30 degrees to prevent spills, the twin Sub Zero fridge/freezer units provide all the storage needed and there is a hatch overhead large enough to remove the refrigerators in case they need replacing. The relaxed crew mess to starboard has a table with adjustable height and position so that it can provide either a crew dining space or a coffee table or footstool.

Originally conceived as a 115-foot boat, Atalante was extended to 127 feet to enhance the crew space, which is finished to the same high standard as the rest of the boat. In the extension to starboard is the captain’s office, which doubles as an extra crew cabin. To port is a laundry room with two pairs of washing machines and driers. This space also provides an additional shower/toilet for the extra crew. Under the floor is a huge freezer. The chain lockers are also integrated within this extension, so that the weight of the chains is located as far aft as possible.

The captain’s cabin to port features a double bed and ensuite head and shower, as well as a monitoring screen in the wall to follow developments on board. The double crew cabin to starboard also has an ensuite head and shower. The detailed design of the crew area underscores how important a happy crew is to the successful operation of a yacht of this quality.

yachts middle east - Claasen Shipyard - Atalante exterior

    Control and engine room

The control room, which contains all the electrical switch panels, is fully air-conditioned. The engine room benefits from a very smart layout and a lot more space than is normally seen on boats of this size. “This is a crucial space, and tends to be very complex,” Weerens says. “The technical installations on Atalante are sophisticated yet straightforward. The Scania main engine with controllable pitch propeller and two Northern Lights generators are solid, proven technology. We didn’t install any experimental systems where we felt that the risks outweighed the benefits. There are tanks for hydraulic, clean and dirty oil. The oil changes of the main engine and generators can be done efficiently with a system of fixed pumps and hose reels.”

“The biggest problem on yachts of this type is getting the exhaust to the back. Many have chosen for a simpler amidships exhaust to port and starboard, which can lead to exhaust fumes in the centre cockpit while sailing. The exhaust on Atalante, however, is cooled through the addition of cold water, which is subsequently separated and the dry remainder expelled in the back. The separators have to be well above the waterline, and as close to the centreline as possible. This requires an intricate design in terms of space and positioning, which has been skilfully resolved on Atalante – surely this is one of the best engine rooms on a yacht in this category.”

“It’s vital that everything is easy to maintain and access, and not overly complex, because the equipment itself is already very sophisticated and demanding. Atalante’s captain is a qualified engineer, but the crew must be able to look after the guests, sail the boat, and understand how the systems work. It takes a lot of clever design work to get this right.”

yachts middle east - Claasen Shipyard - Atalante exterior

    On deck

Atalante’s deck features several practical social areas, suitable for alfresco lounging, dining or sunbathing with fantastic views. Two biminis – removable for racing – make it easy to take cover from the sun. The most striking thing about the deck is the teak joinery. Everything is meticulously finished, with no expense spared. The low deckhouses are accentuated by mouldings and many striking details, like the integrated grooves in all the overhanging margins of the deckhouses into which sunscreens can be slid to cover all the deckhouses when guests are not on board.

The helm station aft features a large wheel – large enough, in fact, to allow a person to sit on the edge of the cockpit and still comfortably steer. Like all Truly Classics, Atalante features a keyhole-shaped cockpit to facilitate this, and to make it possible to operate the primary winches while standing upright. Charter guests who prefer not to be involved in sailing can spend their time in the main cockpit.

    Rigging

The high modulus carbon mast was produced by Offshore Spars and is fitted with EC6+ continuous carbon rigging. The main sheet is on the captive winch from Harken, while the three pairs of winches for the sheets and running backstays are of a new design from Lewmar. They sparkle in beautifully polished stainless steel, matching the custom binnacle that has the Atalante name and logo cut into the steel.

    Future options

“We’ve built around 30 boats together with Hoek Design,” adds Jan Hart, owner of Claasen Shipyards. “Many, like Atalante, are part of the Truly Classic series where future owners do not have to make all the decisions required with a fully custom design. Using a proven hull concept and design removes the need for them to micro-manage a thousand small decisions. There is a great deal of interest in the TC127 design, which is a popular size for sailing yachts, as it can easily be sailed with four to five crew.”

“What sets Claasen apart is our small dedicated team and low overheads,” Jan Hart concludes. “We build the best possible boat in every set of circumstances and the people who worked on Atalante really gave it their all for the owner. The result is fantastic.”
