    NAUTICA ITALIANA PRESENTS THE NEW HISTORY OF THE SEA IN ITALY

    NAUTICA ITALIANA presented the second part of its NAUTICA 365 strategic plan. Affiliated with Fondazione Altagamma, the Association groups together high-end companies from the entire sector – Industry, Services and Territories – and was created to promote Italian nautical products and services throughout the world, with the aim of restoring them to the reputation they deserve and thus boosting growth and exports. Last October, it presented its NAUTICA 365 strategic plan, based on three key pillars aimed at supporting growth:
    1) Nautica Italiana’s Manifesto
    2) The Charter of Values, immediately translated into an Ethical Contract
    3) A new national and international promotion plan

    In recent months, the Association has engaged an intensive action on all three fronts.
    Particular focus was devoted to the new event strategy, formulated first and foremost on the basis of a thorough analysis of the overall scenario, i.e., the priorities of international growth of companies and, at the same time, the industry’s need for support in promotion on the domestic market as well. In addition, the Association was able to rely on the competences and expertise offered by its chosen professional partner: Fieramilano, Italy’s largest exhibition centre in terms of facility area and infrastructures.
    NAUTICA ITALIANA and Fieramilano, under an agreement soon to be formalised, are working together to write the new history of the sea in Italy, as outlined in a new international trade fair programme starting in 2017, with invitations to participate to be extended to all of Italy’s nautical associations, according to the following schedule:
    • AN OUTDOOR INTERNATIONAL NAUTICAL SHOW DEDICATED TO MEDIUM AND LARGE-SIZE BOATS, IN SPRING
    • A LIFESTYLE & GLAMOUR EVENT, IN SUMMER
    • AN INDOOR EXPOSITION IN MILAN DEDICATED TO SMALL BOATS AND WATER SPORTS, IN AUTUMN

    Lamberto Tacoli, Chairman of NAUTICA ITALIANA, stated: “Our sea – and all of the knowledge, culture and industry that derives from it – does not just belong to the coasts; rather, it is an asset that the entire country should protect and develop. Accordingly, if the greater opportunity for enhancement, meetings and sales of that category of medium and small-size boats that represent the portion of the nautical industry with the strongest growth potential passes through Milan, we want to be there, as effectively as possible, along with Fieramilano. At the same time, for our buyers, who on the day after the purchase become potential tourists, we also want to be able to offer an opportunity to get together in an Italian seaside setting, and this is why we would like to continue the tradition of a big event in Genoa.”

    “I strongly believe that Italy can and must have excellent trade fairs in all fields in which it boasts manufacturing excellence, with the resulting benefits not only for the organiser but also, and above all, for companies. Groups such as Fieramilano and cities such as Genoa must be ready to do their part,” writes Corrado Peraboni, Chief Executive Officer of Fieramilano, in the letter sent to the Chairman of Nautica Italiana on the occasion of this meeting. “Consequently, we have been very thankful and proud to receive Nautica Italiana’s request to take on an active role in organising a national trade fair programme for this industry.
    We are certainly not starting from nothing: Italian fairs and events, as well as examples from nearby countries, are proof of not only the sustainability of distinct events on land and at sea, but also the need for them. These different events are equally representative, international and excellent; far from being a random jumble they are an organised sequence of fair events that grow together. This is why we immediately agreed with the idea of a national programming, open to contributions from all industry operators.
    In this phase of examination and preparation, we provided Nautica Italiana with our concrete perspective and the organisational conditions that we believe to be necessary for a national programming to be established with the winning characteristics that we all expect. We are organisers and not nautical experts: we offer our expertise with trade fairs and expect that industry operators will provide their specific expertise of their sector.
    As we offer our wishes for a positive press conference, we therefore confirm that Fieramilano, along with the Italian nautical industry, which will create the conditions indicated above, and in collaboration with Genoa, is ready to answer the call and provide its trade fair expertise in implementing the programme.”

    In parallel, the Association will accompany the schedule of large events with a programme of additional initiatives, which is open to further development and is designed to bring the nautical sector to the fore for all of the 365 days of the year. These initiatives will include:

    • SEATEC-YARE, Viareggio and Carrara
    • DESIGN & INDUSTRY, Salone del Mobile Milano (Milan Furniture Fair)
    • SUPERYACHT DESIGN AWARDS, Florence
    • MONTENAPOLEONE YACHT CLUB, Milan

    The Superyacht Report’s Global Order Book confirms the leadership of Italian-made products in the Superyacht industry.
    NAUTICA ITALIANA’s members operating in the Shipbuilding and Refit&Repair sectors rank amongst the best in the world

    Milan, 4 March 2016. Further confirmation of the nautical industry’s substantial recovery, as already highlighted by NAUTICA ITALIANA, and the key role played by Italian-made products in this trend, is provided by figures in the authoritative Superyacht Report’s 2016 Global Order Book. This analyses the segment of superyachts over 30 metres long and confirms the leadership of Italian shipbuilding, an excellence that is fully represented by the association affiliated to Fondazione Altagamma.
    In fact, the Superyacht Report’s Global Order Book reveals that Italy is further consolidating its leadership in the over-30 metre long superyacht sector, with a worldwide percentage of units delivered between 2011 and 2015, equal to 37.2%. This is equivalent to the total of all those delivered in the same period by Holland, Turkey, the United States and the entire Asian continent put together. This leadership is also confirmed by the 2016 trend, which sees Italy’s shipyards working on 177 of these yachts with an average length of 44.2 metres out of a total of 424 yachts being built worldwide.

    This is also reflected in terms of Gross Tonnage (GT), where Italian producers have 32% of the worldwide share of global orders in 2016, whilst, as far as order numbers are concerned, the share is 42.7% (a significant increase compared to 38% in 2015). When overall length is considered, the Italian percentage is 41.7%. These are prestigious statistics, which also confirm Italy’s leadership as regards orders for units of ever increasing size.

    These important figures not only confirm the absolute need to provide concrete support in enhancing and effectively promoting the work of those companies representing quintessential Italian excellence in the world, but also once again highlight the importance of the project of NAUTICA ITALIANA, a large proportion of whose members generate the numbers reflected in the Global Order Book.

    In particular, as far as shipbuilding is concerned:

    • In the 30-45 metre segment, 75 units are being built by Yards included among the members of Nautica Italiana;
    • In the over 45 metre segment, 40 units are being built by Yards included among the members of Nautica Italiana;
    • Among the 50 yards considered by the Report to be most “vital” at global level, 10 builders of superyachts are members of NAUTICA ITALIANA – Arcadia Yachts, Azimut, Baglietto, Benetti, CRN, Custom Line, Mondomarine, Perini Navi, Pershing and Picchiotti – and 4 of these are ranked in the top 15;
    • A member of NAUTICA ITALIANA leads the global ranking in the sailing industry, and another member ranks first for the number of in-house exterior and interior projects in the Yachting world;
    • In general, analysing the design area, Italian shipbuilding leads the world with 30.9% of the world’s in-house exterior projects and 44% of in-house interior projects.
    A position of leadership has been achieved also thanks to the contribution of the Italian accessories and components sectors, the top brands of which are members of NAUTICA ITALIANA.

    Italy is also playing an increasingly important role in the superyacht Refit&Repair sector, which sees the Mediterranean basin as a constantly developing key area, due to this segment’s contribution to the Yachting Industry’s economy. This contribution was driven primarily by routine maintenance, repair in the strictest sense, ever more extensive and major refit work through to the modification of dimensions and restoration of vintage boats.
    Here as well, a member of NAUTICA ITALIANA stands out as one of the top three companies in the world ranking of Refit&Repair yards.

    NAUTICA ITALIANA’S MEMBERS bring on stage a strong representation of Italian brands at the 75th Yachts Miami Beach

    The positive sentiment for the year that has just begun confirms the ability of
    Italian brands to seize the opportunities offered by growth in the Americas.
    Focus on the customers of the future: Millennials

    18 February 2016. NAUTICA ITALIANA, the association affiliated with Fondazione Altagamma and grouping together the high-end Italian companies from the entire sector — Industry, Services and Territories – gathered a very positive sentiment from its members at the prestigious US boat show, Yachts Miami Beach, which naturally also includes the South American market.

    Several brands in the NAUTICA ITALIANA association that are among the top players in Italian shipbuilding — whether large yachts, inflatable boats or accessories — chose the Miami International Boat Show to showcase their latest models and new projects, developed based on cutting-edge technology, materials and styling approaches on which the Italian industry has been constantly working.

    The prestigious Miami International Boat Show was strategically chosen for the increasing opportunities offered by North and South American markets. According to data released on opening days by the NMMA (National Marine Manufacturers Association), the American boating industry has continued to grow with a strong 6% increase YoY over the past five years, and is expected to maintain this trend in the upcoming years. This growth that saw as many as 88 million people sail for an overall spending in pleasure boating that in 2015 exceeded $37 billion. The NMMA data also showed that 95% of the boats used in the USA are manufactured locally.

    Lamberto Tacoli, Chairman of NAUTICA ITALIANA, stated: “Based on the sentiment of NAUTICA ITALIANA’s members, it is this last figure that shows the greatest opportunities for our industry. Indeed, according to 2015 trends and 2016 forecasts gathered by our members, the USA is a market with a strong growth potential, where a high appreciation and deep-rooted passion for boating offer great opportunities for the high-end Italian companies.”

    In fact, the remaining 5% of boats not produced in the USA chiefly includes large yachts that are manufactured by the largest Italian companies, who are ready to increase their presence locally. Italian companies are thus targeting the highest-end market that seeks quality, design and the excellence typical of Italian products. Likewise, top manufacturers of inflatable boats and accessories can seize the multiple opportunities offered by the remaining 95% of the market (largely filled by smaller boats, under 30ft) to expand their business. According to NMMA, the typical buyer for this range of models is the middle class: a segment with an income below $100,000 per year that increasingly seeks quality and design – a need that Italian brands can meet.

    Giovanna Vitelli, Vice-President of NAUTICA ITALIANA, added: “Both in terms of visitors and the growing number of exhibitors, the Miami International Boat Show was the litmus of a market that can grow in very interesting ways worldwide.
    The interest for all-Italian products by the North-American public, as well as Latin-American visitors, was clear and, fortunately, we have seen it turn into sale and purchase agreements of all sizes. In addition, since the purchase process is less impulsive in this part of the world as well, many of our members are going back home with open negotiations that will be finalised in the following weeks.”

    Director Corrado Salvemini, representing the accessories sector, stated: “There has been an excellent flow of visitors in the accessories section of the Show and in the section of small- and medium-sized boats. In demand for accessories, where all-Italian products can play a major role, we saw a confirmation of the recovery trend of the market for this type of boats. Which is also why we can say that the Show opened up excellent opportunities for our industry over the coming years.”

    Therefore, after some difficult years, the market has shown the first signs of a recovery, as confirmed by an increase in orders for 2015, driven by growth in the USA and Europe.
    The presence of NAUTICA ITALIANA’s members at the MIAMI event is also important to gather new elements to support the strategy developed for the industry. In detail, the needs of a younger target group are being explored.

    As shown by NMMA that traced the 2014-2015 trend of North American markets and 2016 trends during Boot Düsseldorf, the average age of boat owners is approximately 6 months older each year. Attracting new generations to the boating world is therefore essential for the industry’s future.
    In this sense, NAUTICA ITALIANA, working together with Fondazione Altagamma — with which it is implementing the Nautica 365 project to promote and expand the industry — is ready to seize and develop the important guidelines that emerged in the Foundation’s recent study, True Luxury Global Consumer Insight. Carried out with the Boston Consulting Group, the study clearly shows that the luxury market over the next few years will continue to grow, but consumers will be more discerning and the new big spenders will be Millennials.
    The survey highlights that overall there were 400 million high-end consumers worldwide in 2015, who spent a total of €845 billion, including unbranded products but excluding cars and yachts. This is a significant and strategic challenge for the nautical industry.
